Verity White

After The Storm

I can’t think of a better way to spend a hot Sunday afternoon than sitting in the garden with a nice drink, playing a great selection of music for my neighbours to hear! The music choice today is the brand new EP by Verity White ‘After The Storm’. This is a fantastic EP of incredible songs, it was started after a certain interview that you can listen to here. When asked about the song writing process, Verity explained that Alex and her, despite being married would write songs separately, pinging emails across the house to each other with ideas. Well, after that interview, Alex challenged Verity to write this EP together and they gave themselves a weekend to come up with some songs. And aren’t I glad about it, because this is the result. And it’s fantastic

Opening up with Alibi, this really kicks things off with a bang. Its loud grungy guitar complementing Verity’s voice perfectly. And what a voice. A perfect mix of Kim Wilde and Stevie Nicks and then some. Add the gorgeous harmonies and you are in musical heaven. This is one of the strongest opening songs I’ve heard in a long time.

Run for Cover is up next. This is a slow moody track, with a very crunchy guitar riff that runs right through. There is a particularly interesting synth solo that I enjoyed, is Alex tapping into some prog roots? Later on in the track the guitar mirrors the previous synth solo. I love that lead guitar tone.

Next up is ‘The One’s You Left Behind’, opening with a haunting arpeggio, then Verity comes in. This is a tragically beautiful song, conveying such a sorrow and longing to hold on to something that has gone. It really makes your spine tingle. Speaking of hauntingly beautiful, the opening of ‘Who I am’ is very much in a similar vein. Almost baroque style harmony. Wow. A short concise track, coming in at 2 minutes and 46 seconds, that says everything it has to say and more. Don’t apologise for who you are. Go out, be free and you will flourish! I love the attitude behind this song. The acceptance of yourself. It’s a great outlook.

The previously released acoustic version of ‘Inside Your Love’ finishes the EP off perfectly. The song originally from ‘Reclaim; Set Fire’ was recently featured on the Earache New Wave Of Classic Rock and Roll album is a stunning finale. This is the ‘calm after the storm’. It is completely chilled out and does a wonderful job of bringing this EP to a close. Now, for people who buy the physical copy, there is a very special treat, as there is a sixth song, exclusively for people who have bought the physical CD. A song that Verity and Alex, plus her fans co wrote together during her Monday night Live Stream events. A must hear! As I have a sneaky suspicion that Verity makes her drumming debut on this track!

What a great EP. It leaves you feeling energised and ready to take on the world! Much like a Verity White live show. Its loud, punchy and above all, a great listen. If you do anything this week, go and order this EP, you wont regret it.
