Stoakes’ Song of the Week

Todays song of the week is from a band who, up until last night, and a somewhat drunkard phonecall with a friend of mine I had never heard of! It is still Nu Metal November and this one my friends is, to me at least, very new nu metal!

This is a band, from LA, they formed back in 1993 and released their first album in 1997. It is from their first album that we get todays song from. This is Loco.

Recorded in 1996 and featuring on Coal Chamber’s debut, self titled album, Loco is possibly the most well known of Coal Chambers songs. The album was recorded in North Hollywood and has been certified Gold by the RIAA, with an excess of 500,000 copies in the United States and is the band’s most successful album.

Despite this enormous success, it failed to make waves over in the UK, with the single peaking at number 80 on the singles charts and the album reaching the heady heights of number 76 on the official UK albums chart!

A funny bit of trivia, in the music video, the crazed truck driver is played by Ozzy Osbourne. He appeared in this video after the band had played his Ozzfest tour in 1996!

After numerous break ups and line up changes, the band officially re formed in 2011. They began writing new material, played a string of shows, including Download and Graspop in 2013. They later signed with Napalm Records and announced in 2015 the release of their first album in 13 years, entitled Rivals. In 2016, the band announced they were taking
indefinite hiatus. Dez Fafara stated Coal Chamber “has no place in my life whatsoever at this point.” In June 2017, Fafara explained that he would start performing Coal Chamber songs with DevilDriver, coming to the realization that Coal Chamber would probably never tour or make music ever again. He then went on to say that the band is “done forever”.[14] In July 2018, Fafara officially announced that Coal Chamber is not coming back.

So, a bit of a sad one tonight, but we can all be thankful for the music that once was. That, my friends, will have to be enough!
