THE 3P CLUB MOVIE REVIEW
The sparse landscape of 2020 has certainly taken its toll on us all! However, there have been many creative endeavours that have come to the surface. There has been a huge surge of creative projects throughout the pandemic, albums, interactive theatre and many film projects. The 3P club is just one of these very projects. A collective that meet every week and deliver a three minute film just for entertainments and creatives sake. The collective have compiled the very best of their efforts, and put the 3P club movie together.
A collection of short films that range from mock horror to documentary, I really like the idea of this collective. Opening with the director explaining the idea behind the project it goes from normal to bizarre in the blink of an eye. From comedy moments, to the damn right absurd, this film, despite the lack of obvious through line, will keep you watching.
I particularly enjoyed ‘The Reeds’, I thought this was a particularly engaging piece and the acting was rather special. A mock horror short that was really well thought out. Quite a high energy piece that was, stylistically, completely opposite to the next feature, ‘The Streets of Britain’ – produced by Ian Sanderson, this was a mock documentary about life during covid times. The dialogue is a comic delight although sadly representative of what we endured last year; ‘ping pong tables prohibited, this bench… forbidden’ – a sad look at the emptiness of 2020 and yet, this short film still maintains a comic edge when people ‘accidently’ fall into shot!
Another stand out piece and possibly the film highlight was ‘Permission’. A piece centred around control and abuse of power. I thought it was really powerful and Amanda Madden’s performance really stood out. The final short, ‘Security’ questions everything that it means to be a man. A great piece, damning our perception of masculinity and challenging us to accept men as we find them.
The 3P Club Movie is a great collection of shorts and I thoroughly enjoyed it. To see a collective of creatives pull together in the dark days of Covid and produce regular short films throughout the pandemic brings hope to us all. This film is about our resilience to quarantine and our continued optimism and it should bring hope to us all, proving that we can get through whatever is thrown at us, providing we stay creative. A really special creative journey that I was glad I was able to witness.
