#OneDark
#OneDark is the first of a trio of albums that Oceanica will release. Oceanica is the brainchild of Enochian Theory frontman Ben Harris-Hayes. The result is a stunning collection of songs that take you on an almighty musical journey.
Beginning with the instrumental track ‘Youth’, interestingly it starts off with a mechanical winding sound followed by a melancholy music box, this then progresses into a mass of bells, evoking a feeling of arrival – we have arrived in the world, that is #OneDark! Following immediately on, is the track ‘Overcome’. This is a high energy track, which really energises the listener. The opening lyric “Do you remember when we didn’t care”, taking us back to a place when we were all carefree.
The next track ‘All The Cool Kidz R Doin’ It’ begins with an electronic synth in an attempt to fool the listener into thinking it’s that kind of song. It very quickly turns into a metal epic with a speedy guitar/bass riff coming in. The track flips between the two contrasting genres throughout and makes for a very interesting and engaging listen.
I love Ben’s clever use of soundscape and sound layering. He uses ambient sound to great effect. For example, on the track ‘Start From The Start’ it begins with an ambient soundscape of what sounds like someone coming home and trying to light the gas on a cooker, gradually the sound of blurred music and a crowd is heard which then launches into the main song. He then sings the song but then mid way through the ‘audience’ are heard yet again. Again, it makes for an interesting sonic journey. ‘Start from the Start’ is a beautiful track too by the way. It sounds somewhat indie, compared to the rest of the album, with the inclusion of the typically indie jingly guitar sound!
I have to mention ‘Towards The Sun’, a piano chord begins the track and the track grows with multiple harmony lines. Instrumentally it is quite minimalist, however it feels a really busy song, with clashing harmonies and growing dischord. It really makes you sit up and listen and I think actually, it’s my favourite track on the album. Its absolutely manic, add the breathy repetitive vocals. It’s just brilliant.
The penultimate track of the album, ‘The Entangled Roots’ features some spoken word. Another very interesting moment and Ben’s use of ambient sound again is wonderful. This then leads into the final track ‘The Oblivion Tree’ – If the first track was designed to immerse us into the bizarre world that is #OneDark, then this track is designed to bring us home. A largely instrumental track it’s hopeful and optimistic.
What a fantastic musical journey I have experienced listening to #OneDark. An absolutely wonderful album, that inspires and excites. I love it and Ben’s use of sound only adds to the whole feeling of the album. It is a true work of art.
