Bones UK

Bones UK

London-bred band BONES UK, now based in LA release their self titled debut album. The album is a mix of rock and electronic music all thrown together in the pot. Similar musically to Rob Zombie, with hints of Muse with a taste of Marilyn Manson it really is a brilliant album, with real catchy tunes.

Bones UK is made up of vocalist Rosie Bones and guitarist Carmen Vandenberg. The story goes; they met in a bar in Camden a few years ago, drank a tonne of whiskey and began writing music almost instantly. That is a rock n roll story, if I ever heard one! Aren’t I glad that the Rock fairies got this pairing together.

The album opens with ‘Beautiful is Boring’. The song is a social commentary on the expectation that you have to be magazine pretty to get anywhere in the music business and the fact, that actually, how dull is that. It’s the imperfections that make people truly beautiful. Its a great track with a real smouldering guitar riff running through it. I really like the electronic edge to the distorted guitar sound as well.

There is a surprise cover on the album, ‘I’m afraid of Americans’ – A brilliant cover of David Bowie’s late 90’s song. It really works; they bring a snarling urgency to the song. Delivering a punchy track, that just works so well within this album.

Black Blood is another great track as well, starting with just an acoustic guitar, and bringing strings into the mix. It really shows off Rosie’s voice and it’s the most ‘stripped bare’ song on the album. It has such purity about it and is a real gem.

Bones UK have produced a brilliant debut album. Crossing genres, lines and confronting everything from music-scene sexism, toxic masculinity and the un realistic expectations in the beauty industry. Each track has choruses primed for passionate shouting-along. It’s the ultimate protest album and I love it!
