Enemies and Lovers
‘Supergroup’ is not a term that should be used lightly and A New Revenge is certainly a super, supergroup. With the vocal talents of Tim ‘The Ripper’ Owens, guitarist Keri Kelli, bassist Rudy Sarzo and powerhouse drummer James Kottak , they certainly explode onto the scene with their debut album, Enemies and Lovers.
Right from the opening riff, we know that we’re in for a treat. It instantly grabs you and kicks you in the teeth. What a sound, combining classic NWOBHM esque riffs, with ultra modern, razor sharp guitar. The albums single, ‘The Way’ , is great. You can’t get to the end of the song without singing along, but is it the best track? I think not. There are much better tracks on the album and why they chose ‘The Way’ as the single, I don’t know.
For example, ‘Fallen’. A deep, brooding heavy rock anthem. An absolute killer guitar part, almost Thin Lizzy in stature with a suitably anthemic chorus. This is certainly a track I can’t wait to see live. Then after 3 and a half minutes of Hard Rock Heaven, the final chord drops and leaves you in suspense and leads you into ‘Only the Pretty ones’
‘Only the pretty ones’ would feel quite at home in a gothic horror theatrical spectacular. With a slow build up that drives you to the end, the track gets more intense, the further into it you get. It fades out into the album title track, ‘Enemies and Lovers’. It is thrashier, louder and more on edge than the rest of the album but it still maintains the anthem like chorus, but with that heavy pounding guitar/bass combo that has become ever so familiar.
Overall, an absolutely cracking album. I love the energy that each individual brings to the project. As they proclaim, ‘Here’s to us’ and yes, I would agree. Heres to you guys. Showing that in this age of Arianna Grande, Ed Sheerhan and Justin Bieber, real music still lives on
