Inglorious

KK’s Steelmill, Wolverhampton – 22/09/22

It’s always a pleasure to go to KK’s for a gig, especially when it’s been a wet and miserable day and the headliner is Inglorious in the big room.

After having to sadly cancel previous night’s show in Hull due to Nathan catching a throat infection, there was no chance he was going to take it easy tonight. There were some seriously tonsil challenging songs on the set list here and a couple of excellent surprises too. Read on…..

The great thing about Inglorious songs is that most of them are great openers and could be great closers too. This time the opening choice was ‘She Won’t Let you Go’, opening track on the ‘We Will Ride’ album too. No sign of Nathan struggling here. The band all charging in the right direction and clearly ready to deliver to the excellent turn out here, despite the horrible weather.

The first four songs are a brilliant barrage of rock, culled from three albums before Nathan settles into his chat with the audience and asks us to remind him where we are for the song ‘Where Are You Now?’ from ‘Ride To Nowhere’.

One of my favourite tracks and a popular choice, ‘High Flying Gypsy’ is up next and gets a great reaction, Dan and Vinnie making the most of the extra space on the big stage. Classic rock at its best.

It was great to hear a couple of deep dives from the Inglorious II album next, considering this album is five years old and three studio albums ago, this was a confident choice. And a good one.

Time to bring the rock down a level with a trio of brilliant acoustic tracks. Phil came down from his drum tower to show us his legs as well as his wonderful twiddling on the 12 string.

Coming off the Heroine album, Cyndi Lauper’s, ‘Time After Time’ sounds magnificent live and Nathan’s, warm and emotive vocals give it a real big hug. And the mellow sounds continue with Foo Fighters tracks ‘My Hero’ and ‘Best Of You’ being played in memory of Taylor Hawkins, Danny, Phil and Nathan really pushing the emotion button. Sensational.

Back to latest album We Will Ride, ‘We Will Meet Again’ and ‘He Will Provide’. Fitting track titles considering the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and the ascension of King Charles III?

Another couple of my faves, ‘Eye Of The Storm’ and ‘Holy Water’ are up next. Clearly favourites of the band too with the duelling Dan Stevens and Danny Dela Cruz fighting it out on these crackers. Whilst they are both making the most of the spotlight, I’d love to see some extended off-piste action here, just as the classic rock bands of yore would have played them. There’s surely enough talent on display here for that?

With the twilight of the show upon us, there’s no sun going down here. Tracks ‘I Don’t Need Your Loving’ and ‘Until I Die’, opening tracks from Inglorious II & I respectively shining bright and showing how much love the band have for these two first albums.

Always a great show from Inglorious and this was no exception, Nathan clearly glad to get through it with his voice still intact. A very well considered setlist, when you think how many obvious, popular tracks were omitted this time around. A sign that the band have truly found their feet and are very confident in their back catalogue and writing skills. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another new album next year. Get to a show if you can!
