Night and Day Cafe Manchester – 17/03/24

Coming in to this show I was hoping to hear some nostalgic ‘70’s soaked sounds from two very fine bands indeed. Boy was I in for a treat, not just aurally but visually too!

Silveroller is a fantastic ‘70’s inspired name for Aaron Keylock’s new five piece band who completely look the part. With a six track EP At Dawn having been released at the beginning of March they were ready to share a great night with us on the narrow stage at Night & Day Café in Manchester.

Kicking the set off with the opening track on the EP, Black Crow the energy levels were already set to high. Huge riffs and that wonderful warm sound you get from Ross Munro’s Hammond organ just filled the room. Jonnie Hodson has a beautifully mature voice so well suited to this style of music. Five of the six tracks on the EP were on show here tonight with The Box Tops, The Letter being the second track. The set closed with EP track two, Hold and Aaron showing off his guitar talent with a mid song solo very much appreciated by the enthusiastic crowd.

It was fantastic to see this young five piece band squeezed on to the small stage here, really enjoying the moment and feeding off the energy from the crowd. This was a brilliant introduction to a band I am sure will be making some very big waves very soon.

Dewolff were up next, all the way from the Netherlands this three piece band have been around since 2007 and released nine albums. They are not frequent visitors here unfortunately but on the back of an excellent support slot for Jarred James Nichols recently they promised to come back and here they are.

Equally as ‘70’s inspired as Silveroller, their eight track psychedelic rock show was a masterclass in jamming guitar and organ. Blasting off with favourite opener Night Train the show kept rolling with not a hint of a let up. Robin Piso’s ability to manage the bass lines, on a keyboard and Hammond parts at the same time was something to see.

Pablo van de Poel was constantly on the monitors engaging with the crowd and at one point wandering off into the crowd. There seemed to be so much to listen to all at once, each instrument was feeding off the other and each track blending in to the other, Treasure City Moonchild, Will o’ the Wisp and Tragedy not Today all sounding fantastic. But best track of all was left until the end, Rosita. A more than 16 minute epic it takes you from Americana through Southern Rock to ‘70’s Psychedelia and sums up Dewolff in one song.
